ASSASSIN
The band performs song on a skyscraper rooftop. While we occasional cut to a swat team climbing a narrow stairwell while communicating with each other. As the song progresses we see the team bursting into people’s flats and destroying CDs, TVs, Computers – anything that the band can be listened to on. This reinforces the idea of conspiracy and government control that the song preaches against. At the end of the song the swat team bursts through the roof door but the band is no longer there.
Images: during intro drum fill – over head shot of drum kit. In the guitar solo the camera does a ‘kaleidoscope effect’ on the guitar fret.

THE BAND
Institutional and Audience Context:
The band has been performing together for 5 years now after meeting at university doing a music degree. They were originally very controversial in terms of image but recently have become more commercial to appeal to a wider demographic. They have, however, managed to keep their signature political undertones within their music. In terms of future development, seeing as they are signed by an independent record company, they probably wont be making any drastic changes in the near future, as they are fairly happy with where they are at the moment in terms of their overall image.
· Queens Of The Stone Age (www.qotsa.com/)

· Against Me (www.againstme.net/)

They are very much a stadium rock band with a political twist and therefore some of their competitors include
· Kasabian (http://www.kasabian.co.uk/)

· The Enemy (http://www.theenemy.com/)

· Reverend And The Makers (http://www.iamreverend.com/)

The bands primary influences include:
· Muse (www.muse.mu/)
· Muse (www.muse.mu/)

· Rage Against The Machine (www.ratm.com/)
· Queens Of The Stone Age (www.qotsa.com/)

· Against Me (www.againstme.net/)

· Reverend And The Makers (http://www.iamreverend.com/)
The genre helps shape the bands image in terms of appearance. The band sticks to conventional rock stereotypes such as skinny jeans, sponsor t-shirts, long hair, black ect.
The Band are signed to an independent record label along with a number of other up and coming rock bands similar to them. This choice of label makes the possibilities of development unlimited because the band is almost completely in control of their own image.
The bands audience is comprised mainly of 18-35 year old white males (A, B, C on the JICTAR social scale). The typical lifestyle a fan may demonstrate is the classic ‘sex, drugs and rock and roll’ mentality. Although they must be fairly educated seeing as the bands music confronts some fairly complex and mature politics.

The band has a fairly organic sound, meaning their music is more honest and designed for a niche market. As opposed to a synthetic sound designed for a more popular commercial scene. I obtained this information from “Producing Pop” by Keith Negus (Longman 2000).
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
“Just because you can record, doesn’t mean you should” – Christopher Knab, FourFront Media and Music
This quote intrigued. Only quality should record.
When choosing the song for my pop video I first decided a genre to look at. A genre that really appealed to be is stadium rock, with particular reference to politically provocative bands. I looked at a few bands that fitted these criteria and came across one that inspired several ideas for videos. The band I picked was ‘Muse’ – I managed to narrow the song choice down to ‘New Born’ and ‘Assassin and ended up settling on ‘Assassin’.
I looked up the lyrics (below) and went on the official Muse website (www.muse.mu/) to get an idea of the meaning of the lyrics and managed to find out it is all about the New World Order conspiracy, unjustifiable war, abusive power, conspiratorial manipulation, populist revolt and various other conspiracies that interest the band. The song urges people to break free of the grip that society has on them. It supports rebellious, non-conformist and anti-capitalist views.
To represent this I have chosen to shot the music video on the roof of a skyscraper. Due to the low budget, because it is the bands first single, this will probably be blue screened. This will be accompanied by occasional cuts to a swat team climbing a narrow stairwell while communicating with each other. On the way up they burst into people’s apartments who are listening/watching the band perform the song and destroy all TV’s, CD’s ect. At the end of the song the swat team bursts through the roof door but the band is no longer there. This not only portrays the government as abusive and controlling but also as incompetent because the band escapes easily. Other images I would use, purely because they tie in with the music would be an over heard shot of the drum kit during the opening drum fill. Also I would attempt a ‘kaleidoscope’ on the guitar fret during the guitar solo.

Lyrics:
War is overdue
The time has come for you
To shoot your leaders down
Join forces underground
Lose control
Increasing pace
Warped and bewitched
In time to erase
Whatever they say
These people are torn
Wild and bereft
Assassin is born, yeah...
Oppose and disagree
Oppose and disagree
Destroy Demonocracy
Lose controlIncreasing pace
Lose controlIncreasing pace
Warped and bewitched
Intend to erase
Whatever they say
These people are torn
Wild and bereft
Assassin is born, yeah...go!

POP VIDEO 2009/10
THE BRIEF
As a group we are to develop a concept, image and brand for a new singer, group or band and develop and produce their first pop video, their first DVD cover and their first magazine advertisement. In order to establish the group and especially their image and brand for a particular audience.
FIVE STAGES OF PRODUCTION
1. Research and Development:
Research and development involves first choosing a track for the music video, this could be an original song by the band or a cover song. Then we must develop our idea for how we will present the song in terms of performance, potential narrative, and possible images we could include in the music video. Once our idea is fully developed and we have a solid idea for our video, we must pitch our idea to the commissioning executives/marketing department of the record company. Within this pitch we will talk about the band’s image and their target audience, genre, institutional context, the basic concept for the video and the ideological values behind it. We will have to think about the feasibility of the project in term of budget and logistics relating to special effects, locations, cast and crew. We will do our best to really sell the idea in hope that the project will be ‘greenlit.’
2. Pre-Production
If the project is ‘greenlit’ that means that the second stage of production – pre-production – can begin. This involves planning the shoot day/s and really working out the logistics of it all. This requires group role lists, storyboards, floor/lighting plans, and props list, and cast list, equipment list to be drawn up. A shooting schedule and call sheet will also have to be made for the shoot day/s. If any special effects are being filmed a camera test is advised to avoid running into more problems later on in the production process. Plans must be made for the DVD cover and magazine advertisement.
3. Production
In order for the third stage of production to run smoothly it is very important that we have carried out the previous stages extremely thoroughly. It is important that the band have been provided with music and lyrics a few days beforehand so they can learn the song. It is also vital that everyone is punctual on the day and concentrates on doing their assigned jobs to the best of their ability in order to achieve the highest standard of work.
4. Post-Production
Post-production is the editing process carried out after filming. In this stage the video is compiled, using Final Cut Pro, and put to the music. It is also the stage in which all the special effects are added to the footage in Adobe After Effects.
5. Distribution and Marketing
In this stage the video is released to the general public to promote the band. It can be uploaded onto an official band ‘YouTube’ channel, shown on music television or broadcasted through social networking sites like ‘MySpace’
